Pico Arieiro

Madeira Island tours – Pico do Arieiro, at 1818 m high, is Madeira island’s third highest peak. The footpath northwards towards Pico Ruivo is an important tourist attraction, with a daily average of 1000 tourists trekking on it.
There is easy road access to the summit, with a large car park and a restaurant and souvenir shop.

Levada do Caldeirao Verde

Madeira levada walks – The levadas originated out of the necessity of bringing large amounts of water from the west and northwest of the island to the drier southeast, which is more conducive to habitation and agriculture. In the sixteenth century the Portuguese started building levadas to carry water to the agricultural regions.
Many levadas are cut into the sides of mountains, and it was also necessary to dig 25 miles (40 km) of tunnels.
A popular levada to hike is the Levada do Caldeirão Verde which continues as the Levada Caldeirão do Inferno. Together it is about 37 km long.

Diving Madeira

Madeira botanical garden

The Botanical garden property (35 000 m) is surrounded by fantastic views of mountains in the north and the ocean in the south. It was created in 1960 ans is situated about 3 kilometers from the center of Funchal City.
One of its main purposes was the conservation of indigenous Madeiran plants, some of which are very rare and extinct in the wild. The garden reveals to the visitor a mix of harmonious shapes and contrasting colors of 2500 exotic plants.
The garden is divided into five sections exhibiting local as well as foreign plants. One of those parts is devoted to exotic birds. The “Parrot Park” has a collection of about 300 exotic birds including Dwarf Parrots and Macaws.

Madeira Nature Park – In order to safeguard a vast natural heritage, which is a relic in the world and includes some species threatened with extinction, as well as the preservation of some high quality humanized areas, created the Natural Park of Madeira. It compromises two-thirds the area of Madeira, being a protected area which includes several very diverse areas such as the Laurissilva Forest, the whole area of mountain ranges, the Ponta de São Lourenço and several rural areas.
